Walking Tall

About a week ago, Ella started to try and walk. It started out with two steps to get from the sofa to the table. But yesterday, it was 3-4 steps and then by nighttime, it was about 10 steps at a time. She definitely wants to learn how to walk, she tries every chance she gets. So, yipee... she is on the curve again in learning and developing.

But still off the curve in weight... she is 16 lbs and 9 oz (3%) and 75% in height. She is growing out of her car seat (those little legs hang off), but still has a long time until she can officially get out. And she has graduated to whole milk, cheerios, goldfish and waffles.

We tried string cheese and peaches last night, but no go.. Any suggestions on other baby friendly starting out foods. She is taking this whole table food thing a bit slow. So, our motto now is... practice, practice, practice.

Give me Five

About a month or so ago, I shared a project about capturing your child's hand print each year. We have officially started that tradition. This week for Family Home Evening, we "hand printed" each of the girls and this is how they turned out. I love them so much and can't wait to see these as the years come and go.

The How To: It was super easy.

1) I went to JoAnns and purchased stretched canvas blocks in 4X4 and 5X5.

2) I painted them with 2 coats of acrylic paint. I think it is best to paint one coat white (even though it is white already... it is like priming it). And then a coat or two of the color. Let it dry in between each coat.

3) Then I painted the girls hands with a contrasting color and pressed them carefully onto the canvas.

4) Dated it and wrote their name on the back. (I am waiting to hang them up in our new house).

Martha Does it Again

I don't know if this is new or not, but I just discovered something great on Martha Stewart's website. She has so many great ideas, it is hard to keep track of all of them. But now you can. They have a My Collections section where you can save and tag all their ideas, articles and recipes. It is awesome. Now, I can have one place where I can save all her great ideas and search them in my own special way. She got me again!

Finally

Back in December, I talked about Hannah's preschool Christmas performance. It was about the funniest thing to date, our girl has done. She sang this song about as loud as possible and knew every word. And the best part was she was right in front of the microphone, so needless to say, she got some attention. (As a side note: I was crying with laughter by the end of the song.)

Our camera died about 24 seconds (to be exact) into her performance, but after months of trying to locate missing cords to our camcorder, I now have those lost 24 seconds. So, enjoy the performance and just imagine all 3 minutes like this, but better because she got into her groove as the song continued, while the other kids lost their groove.

An idea and some suggestions

For some reason, I have this nagging idea about renovating a piece of furniture. I am always looking on Craig's List at what is being sold and most of it is 70's pieces that I think - "no way, jose." But lately, I have been looking at the pieces of furniture thinking "I wonder if that would be cute with a new coat of paint and some antiquing."

Now, the tricky part and the part that keeps me from really doing this is that I have never refinished a piece of furniture in my life. So, I am mostly scared to try and am afraid I would start the project but never finish it.

But then I came across these pieces and thought I love the lines (they remind me of Pottery Barn a bit) and I bet this would look adorable with a new coat of paint, some roughing up of the edges and some new hardware pulls. And then I found this piece from Pottery Barn and thought, they are super similar as far as lines and style... so "yes, they probably would be cute."

Bottom line is... I am tempted to try it. And if not black, maybe even one of these colors. So, if anyone out there has experience with this kind of thing and could give me an idea of what I might be getting myself into... I would sure appreciate it.

It just might push me over the edge to actually do it :-)

Sunday - Pot Roast and rolls

Tuesday - Chunky Chicken and Chorizo Chili I used Root Beer instead of beer and didn't use the chorizos, but made up for it with extra spices.*****

Being Released

I thought I would have one more lesson to teach in Young Women's but I found out that this week is Stake Conference, so it looks like last week was my last lesson. I am sad that I won't be able to teach the girls anymore and sad to not be able to learn and create (at least in YWs).

But it is temporary. In a month or so, I will have a new calling with new ways to learn and create and hopefully provide more lessons and helpful goodies. So stay tuned, we will see what the next ward has in store for me.

Birthday Bash Continues

Here are just few more pictures of Ella's birthday bash. Isn't Ella's shirt so cute. Stacey gave it to her for her birthday. I love it!

The big 1

Ella had her first birthday on Sunday. I can't believe she is already one year old. We had a little birthday party with Aunt Jill and Uncle Ty and our neighbors. Ella loved when we sang "Happy Birthday" to her and loved the presents she received after they were unwrapped. It was a great party for her until we made her eat her cupcake... then the party took a terrible turn.

We put the cupcake in front of her face and she put her hands in it and seconds later she started to get very upset. She definitely didn't like the feel of the frosting. Then dad stuck the frosting in her mouth and it was all over. She broke down into the most terribly sad cry. The whole "cupcake ceremony" lasted about 3 mins and 2 1/2 mins of it was in tears. (See the progression below).

But all returned to happiness when she was clean again and on the floor playing with her toys and friends and family. It has been a great first year with our little Ella.

It was fun!

On yesterday's post I shared an "art deco" translation of a photo someone took of their son (I really wish I can remember where I found this photo). I loved it and shared that I wanted to do it someday. Well, yesterday was the day. (I love not having to wait). My friend wanted to do it with one of her sons photos I took. I was thrilled and immediately jumped on getting it done.

Imagine this photo in a 12 year old boy's room, big and colorful on the wall. I love it! It seems very Pottery Barn-ish to me. I can't wait to see it on canvas. I will show you the final piece when I get it, but for now I just has to share what I created.

What fun!

I found this picture on a photography forum I frequent and I love it. What a fun idea! Turn a picture of your kid into a colorful piece of art. This would be so great blown up big on canvas and hanging in a kid's bedroom or play room. I am tempted to try it.

Young Women's Lesson #6 - A Women's Responsibility To Teach

Before I start, I want to give credit to Stephanie Bridges. Many of these ideas came from her. And apologize if there are a lot of grammar or spelling mistakes. I haven't had time to edit this. So, here we go....

LESSON

Ask three young women to read the following scriptures:
Doctrine and Covenants 88:77;
Doctrine and Covenants 88:118;
Mosiah 4:14–15.

• What does it mean to teach someone?
• Why is it important to teach others?

Cut an apple in half around the “belly”. Show the seeds and ask how many apples we could grow from these seeds. Talk about how you can count the seeds in an apple but you can't count the apples in a seed, meaning you never know what effect your teaching can have. Each day we teach by words, attitude, actions and examples.

Emphasize that when we teach in the right way, we give others knowledge or abilities that they can use to improve their lives and the lives of others. We learn most of the things we need to know from other people, either from their words or their examples.

There are different methods of teaching. We are going to discuss both spiritual teaching methods and practical teach methods.

1. TEACH BY GAME

Tell the class: The category is, “what ways are women teachers?” One girl will get one word and have to act or draw or describe it (without saying the word) to get the other girls to guess.

-Mother
-Job
-Church Calling
-Friend
-Missionary

See how you I taught you “how women are teachers” by using games.

Explain to the young women that throughout their lifetimes, they will have opportunities to teach. They teach in their present families; in school; among neighbors, friends, and peers; in their community; and in Church callings. They will also teach in their future family situations.

If they talk with a friend, counsel someone, or touch the life of a child, they have taught. They teach daily by words, attitudes, actions, and examples. They are always teaching.

Quotation
Elder Boyd K. Packer said: “Much of what we do is teaching. Showing a youngster how to tie his shoe, … helping a daughter with a new recipe, giving a talk in church, bearing testimony, conducting a leadership meeting, and, of course, teaching a class—all of this is teaching, and we are doing it constantly” (Teach Ye Diligently [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1975], p. 2).

Ask the young women to think of ways in which they have taught by word, attitude, action, or example during the past twenty-four hours. Encourage the young women to tell of specific things they have done.

Question • Where is the most important place that anyone can teach?

Quotation
President David O. McKay: “The home is the first and most effective place for children to learn the lessons of life: truth, honor, virtue, self-control; the value of education, honest work, and the purpose and privilege of life. Nothing can take the place of home in rearing and teaching children, and no other success can compensate for failure in the home” (in Family Home Evening Manual, 1968–69, p. iii).

Talk more about teaching as a mom using personal experience.

Explain that President Spencer W. Kimball said this about our most important teaching responsibilities:

“We remember the words of Nephi as he counseled: ‘And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ … that our children may know to what source they may look.’ (2 Nephi 25:26.) What inner strength would be in every person if he knew that the Master and His teachings were indeed his great source of guidance, his great source of correct example, his great source of help! That is our prime goal in all our teaching in the home” (“Therefore I Was Taught,” Ensign, Jan. 1982, p. 4).

Jesus Christ Is Our Example as a Teacher

• Who was the greatest teacher?

Display the pictures of Christ teaching, and explain that Jesus was the master teacher. Explain that we can learn much by studying his methods and following his example.

TEACH WITH LOVE
1. Jesus loved the people he taught, and they felt his love. See 3 Nephi 17:3–10. (Jesus loved the people so much that he stayed longer with them because they wanted him to. He healed their sick, and they worshiped him.)

TEACH WITH STORIES OR PaRABLES
2. He used stories and examples that were familiar to people so they would understand and be able to apply his teachings. See Luke 15:3–10. (Jesus used the examples of a shepherd and a woman cleaning her house to show Heavenly Father’s happiness when sinners repent.)

Method: Parables

The Lark - Sitting in the high branches of a tree, safe from harm, a lark saw a traveler walking through the forest carrying a mysterious small black box. The lark flew down and perched on the traveler’s shoulder.
“What do you have in the little black box?” He asked.
“Worms” the traveler replied.
“Are they for sale?”
“Yes, and very cheaply,” he said. “The price is only one feather per worm.”
The lark thought for a moment. I must have a million feathers; surely I won’t miss one of them. Here is an opportunity to get a good dinner for no work at all. So he told the man he’d buy one. He searched carefully under his wing for a tiny feather. He winced a bit as he pulled it out but the size and quality of the worm made him quickly forget the pain. High up in the tree he began to sing as beautifully as before. The next day he saw the man and once again exchanged a feather for a worm. What an effortless way to get dinner! Each day the lark surrendered a feather and each loss seemed to hurt less and less. In the beginning he had many feathers but as the days passed he found it more difficult to fly. Finally, after the loss of one of his primary feathers, he could no longer reach the top of the tree, let alone fly up into the sky. In fact he could do no more than flutter a few feet in the air, and was forced to seek his food with the bickering sparrows. The man with the worms came no more because there were no more feathers to pay for the meals and the lark no longer sang because he was ashamed of his fallen state.

Moral: I talked about giving eternal blessings away for temporal gratification. I talked about it as a parable about chastity and false "sense of love"/immorality and how boys will use girls as long as you keep giving them more and more of "themselves" and then they too will just walk away and leave a girl alone and in reality not loved. Don't sell your feathers for for instant gratification or "false love."

TEACH AT THE RIGHT MOMENT (when the spirit directs you)
3. He taught the people when they needed to be taught. He didn’t tell them to wait until it was convenient for him. See Luke 9:10–11. (Jesus and the Apostles had gone to a place where they could be alone, but the people followed them. Jesus did not tell them to go home and come back later. He taught them and healed them.)

EXAMPLES:
When you share comments in class or bearing your testimony, you are teaching others by your example and stories. Deciding to share (usually when the spirit directs you) is teaching at the right moment.

Sharing the gospel with friends is teaching at the right moment.

TEACH USING THE SCRIPTURES
4. He knew the scriptures well and had prepared himself spiritually to teach. See Matthew 4:1–11. (Jesus went to the desert so that he could spend time fasting and being with Heavenly Father. When the devil came and tempted him, he could resist the temptations because he knew what the scriptures taught.)

4. He knew the scriptures well and had prepared himself spiritually to teach. (orange) --I had an orange colored bag and inside I put a whole apple and a bag of cut up apples for them to pass out.--

Method: object lesson
Lesson: Begin eating the whole apple, tell the others how delicious the fruit you're eating is! Then continue to eat the apple. After stopping and telling the others about your delicious apple several times, ask if they would like to try some apple also. Pass around the sliced apples and have them try the fruit. Ask them if they agree that the fruit is delicious. After they agree that the fruit IS delicious, make the following point: As I have just demonstrated, I can tell you how delicious the apple is but you won’t really know until you try it for yourself. It is the same with scripture reading, someone else can tell you how wonderful it is but, you will never truly know and understand "how delicious it is," until you try it for yourself.

TEACH WITH THE SPIRIT and PRAYING
5. He prayed often for Heavenly Father to help him teach and to bless the people he taught. See 3 Nephi 17:14–17. (When Jesus prayed to Heavenly Father and asked him to bless the people, the things he said were so sacred that the people could not even write them.)

Method: brainstorming -- I asked them to come up with different ideas on how we can be better member missionaries. And I wrote their answers on the board.

Explain that by following the example of Jesus, the young women can teach others and help them change their lives. As women, friends and someday moms... we will always be teaching.

HANDOUT – I gave each girl an apple with a paper leaf tied to it with a bow and on the leaf it said “ ALWAYS A TEACHER”

Happy Heart Day

With a child in school, Valentine's Day has become a significant holiday. We started off with having to make valentine's treats for dance class at the last minute. And then remember some kind of valentine gift for the teachers and of course friends and classmates. WOW. Luckily, I had an idea in my head that has been there for almost a year and I finally got to do it.

Hannah and I made these cute oreo lollipops. I dipped them and Hannah sprinkled them. They are so cute and actually pretty easy. The hardest part was tying the bows. Hannah was a real trooper. She wrote her name on each tag... all 28 of them. I thought I would get 5-6 out of her, but she did them all. Oh, and the tag says "I am a sucker for you. Happy Valentine's Day"

Side note - I had to write numbers at the top of each tag to help her with spacing. She would run out of room on the first "n" and write the rest of her name filling in the blanks. So, it would look like "h - n - a - h - n -a". But with a little guidance, she did them all perfectly.

The lollipops are for her friends and classmates and the mailboxes are for her teachers. They have yummy treats inside.

With only having to do this for one child. This is a great holiday. We will see what I think about it 7 years from now.

Hope everyone has a great happy heart day!

More Disney Photos

I took just a few photos while visiting the Magic Kingdom. Here are some more for your viewing. These ones are of the girls and the princesses and other characters around the park. And you will be so proud.. I even got pictures of Ella. Yay, Me!
