Let's build a community

I know many people that visit my blog come for my Young Women's lessons. Now that I am a counselor in the Young Women's I don't teach as much as I used to. Which is sad, because that really is what I love to do. The hard thing about my calling is coming up with 2-3 mutual activities a month. That is sooo hard!

This is where you come into play. I am looking to the community of YW leaders to help me out and to help each other out. Whether or not you are in charge of activities, many of you are involved in YW and mutual (if only by attending and supporting). I would love to have each of you share with me what your YW do each week in mutual.

I have been posting the activities my YW do each week hoping that it helps many of you out there. My thought is each week when I post my ideas, you share with me in the comments section, what your YW did that week. I will then take all the comments and make a separate post each week with all the ideas in one location so people can have a place to go to for ideas and activities.

I know this would help me out a ton. It is hard to come up with creative, interesting and fun activities each month, so let's help each other and share our ideas. What do you say?

If and whenever I get put back into YW (and let's hope it is soon, I miss it already), I will share our activities. I can't wait to hear what you come up with. This is great idea Ange!

When I was YW president in the Arlington Ward (mid 90's) I decided that we would do a service project every week for a few months. I kept my ears open for things people needed. I heard someone say they had lots of tomatoes to bottle so we went and helped her. We collected food for a pantry, visited older ward members, etc. I'd have to look in my calendar to remember the rest. It was a good few months!

I am the beehive advisor and so I usually teach but last week the counselor couldn't be there and we didn't have anything planned so since the girls are getting to that babysitting age we learned about infant CPR and heimliech and we also made activity booklets with ideas for games, treats, songs to sing talked about who to call in an emergency and all that good stuff that goes along with that, including how to change a diaper.

Sounds great! I have been lurking at your blog for quite awhile. When my SIL (Michelle W) started a blog, I was surprised to see that you two know each other.

I would love to have this resource. I'm in the YW presidency also.

I'm all for it! I've just started posting YW weekly activities on my blog. I'm sure we could swap some ideas....I've been the 1st counselor in YW's in my ward for 4 years now. :)

Sounds like a great idea. I already have done a few of your activities. So sometimes I will just tell you that I "borrowed" your idea that week. But, I have been in yw as a Beehive advisor, MiaMaid Advisor, camp director, 1st Counselor, 2nd Counselor, and currently president. A total of 8 - 9 years so I am sure I have a few ideas I can share :)

I'm a "lurker" too and I love your ideas! I'm in the presidency also and am always looking for new ideas. We just did a back to school night where all the leaders put together a poster board of pictures of ourselves from Jr.High to Highschool. We then each took a turn telling the girls a little about ourselves back then, lessons we learned, what we loved and things we would've changed. Our president related our experiences to a travel guide. We've "visited" all the cool places and "eaten" at the best restaurants. We are there to help them decide where to visit and what to avoid. It was pretty embarassing, but the girls got a major kick out of it and know that we really can relate.

This is an awesome idea. I appreciate your willingness to share. I love your ideas and I am also the beehive advisor and would love to participate.

Ok, so my daughter did this activity a few years ago in our old ward (combine YM/YW) and had the best time. We moved into our new ward a while back and I was put back into YW's and I didn't make it to YW's this night but my daughter (16) came home very excited because they did the exacte same activity. It was taking items which the YW's presidency had gathered from around the house and putting together a BOM story and video tapeing it. You don't have a lot of time to do this, but its so much fun taking the items and trying to re-tell the stories for the scriptures in modern times. The kids had so much fun. During both activities, my daughter said she got to see her leaders in a whole new light, and really got to know the YM's leaders better.

I am the Mia Maid advisor in our ward. We have been focusing alot on modesty lately and the majority of our summer activities have had to do with modesty and they have been joint activities - one popular one was our field trip to the mall. We divided the girls into groups and they were given a certain kind of outfit they had to put together - first day of school, prom, sunday best etc. They worked as teams to put together a modest outfit in the store and then we gathered together in a corner of the store after they were done for them to show off the outfits they put together. They had lots of fun and did a great job putting a modest, cute, stylish outfit together. I had talked to the store manager ahead of time to let them know what we were doing and they were fine with it - they just wouldn't allow us to take pictures.

After they were done we gave each of the girls a bag of red hots with a little tag that said "Modest is the Hottest"
