Scripture Spots

Our scripture reading each night is pure chaos. The kids do anything and everything besides
listen and sit and read. Usually Hannah's reading other books, Ella and Jake are playing with
toys, rolling around, gymnastics, jumping off furniture... you name it. So, I wanted to come up
with their spot where they all had to sit while we read scriptures. I was going to use a vinyl
heavy-weight tablecloth-type material, but it is expensive and boring colors.

I found these at Ikea and they are perfect. Each kid has their own color. I painted their initial on it and it has become their spot that they have to sit on during scripture time. If they leave their spot, they don't get read a story that night. It has been working more or less. It isn't perfect, but it is a lot better than it used to be, so we will declare it a success.

Fun idea! Scripture time is hard. Right now we are having the boys draw pictures as we read of what they hear. It keeps them listening and busy and usually provides us with some good laughs afterwards.

Great idea. We go through spells when our kids are less cooperative than others. A year ago my husband was deployed and after a very frustrating night of trying to get them to read scriptures (which actually involved me running up the stairs crying and saying "no, you can't read scriptures tonight!!!") a little chocolate and prayer helped me calm down and realize that my children hadn't ever been told what was expected of them during scripture reading. The next night I sat down with them and we came up with a set of rules (ei., everyone sits on furniture, everyone takes a turn, no toys allowed, etc). Then we came up with some consequences. We made a small rules poster that fits in our family Book of Mormon and we pull it out to review it when things get a little chaotic. It works really well for us.

Great and simple idea - I might need to go to IKEA.
