First Day

Today is Hannah's first day of kindergarten. We are officially parents of a child in elementary school.

Last week, Hannah and I went to the mall and she picked out her first day of school outfit. Last night, we gave Hannah a blessing to start our her new school year. (and of course Ella got one too). Then today, dad came home from work and we all walked to school together. Hannah at first held my hand, but then as we got closer to school, she let go and took off running.

When we got there, she ran into some friends from preschool (which was cute) and then she met her teacher. I took her picture with her teacher and off she went into the classroom and didn't even turn around to wave goodbye. So, needless to say, she is ready and excited to be a kindergartener.

I am baking cookies for her arrival home and tonight we are going to paint handprints for FHE. I have to say I held up well. I didn't cry. I thought about it a couple of times, but didn't dwell on it much and since she was so happy, I didn't have to worry about her. I think 1st grade will be a whole different story for me.

Making Breakfast fun

I found this little idea and thought brilliant. What a fun way to dress up breakfast. Instead of the same ol' cereal, why not make it look like a ice cream sundae. I love it and lucky me, I already have the ice cream glasses! Perfect!
thanks for the idea Stacy Jillian

A fairy visits!

Hannah lost her first tooth (on August 20th). It had been loose for about 2 weeks, but today it was really loose and she asked for us to pull it out. I of course said we had to wait for dad to come home (because I didn't want to pull it). But she was very interested in having it out before she went to her friends' birthday party, so she could show them.

So, when dad came home, he hesitantly pulled it out (it came out very easily). Hannah was so excited! She was jumping up and down and just thrilled to pieces to have her tooth out. And even more thrilled to show her friends her missing tooth.

That night she put the tooth under her pillow and asked a ton of questions about the tooth fairy. "How will she know to come get my tooth?" "How does she get in the house?" etc, etc.

The next morning bright and early (6:30 am to be exact), she came bounding into our room to let us know that the tooth fairy came and left her money (4 quarters). She was so excited and happy. The whole experience for her has been the highlight of her year!

Making Lunches fun

My girl is just starting kindergarten, so we aren't doing lunches yet, but when we do... how fun are these ideas.
I found this cute idea for leaving fun and playful notes in your kids lunches. Again, these are free downloads, so download and share the love with your kids and make their lunches fun! thanks for the cute idea, alpha mom.

and then of course Martha Stewart provides these great stickers that you can download and put on your child's lunch bags. Lunch will never be boring again.

The Art of Display

I found this and thought what a great idea: especially since school is starting and I am sure there will be plenty of projects to display. It is cheap, cool and practical. My daughter loves arts and crafts (which I think i have mentioned before) and this would be the perfect way to display her masterpieces. I just wish I had an empty wall in the house to use this. But maybe our next house.

Check out the link to find out how to create this simple art wall display.

Utah Trip Part 2

Wednesday we headed back to SLC for Chris' family reunion. We started the festivities off with a hike and campfire in the mountains. We hiked, sang songs around the campfire and roasted hot dogs and smore's around the campfire. It was a fun time, until Ella bumped into her cousin and headed straight for the firepit. We are so lucky, she didn't get into the fire. She landed on the concrete and metal rim and only burned her arm. That was a close call!

On Thursday, we went to the Oquirrh Mountain Temple Open House and then came home and the kids made cards and treats and delivered them to some people in the neighborhood. That night we had a girls night out (with no kids) and went to the LDS Conference Center to view the art exhibit they have going right now. It was a spiritual evening as we read about all the different pieces of art and then we went out to dinner. That evening all the cousins had a big sleepover in nana and papa's basement. The kids did great and they all slept in until 8:30 am (how great was that!).

Friday morning, we went to the elementary school to play Ephraim 4th of July games. The kids got to play such games as money in a haystack, water balloon toss, three legged race, candy scramble, etc. The kids loved it and the parents had a great time too! Then it was time for the men to have some time together without kids. They went to lunch and then played Laser Tag. Needless to say, they had a blast. That night it was off to the SLC temple to do sealings together as a family and dinner (without kids).

Saturday, our nephew got baptized and then it was so downtime/free time all afternoon. I was able to make my annual stop at DSW Shoes and picked up a few pair. Then Saturday night it was the swim party and dinner at the neighborhood pool.

Sunday, we blessed Jake and were able to have my parents and chris' family there. It was a beautiful blessing and Jake did great through the whole thing. Chris' sister also blessed their baby that day too (they cousins are a day apart in age). After church, we all went back to the house for lunch and later that night we celebrated James' birthday. And that is about it! We left monday morning as we drove 14 hours back home.

It was a great trip and so much fun to have built all these great memories together!
Oh, and I have more pictures, I am just waiting to get to them, so I will post more later.

What's up with Jake

I figured I better write some things about Jake.. since i don't have a baby book for him yet. (I need to get on that).

Jake: he was a big baby when he was born, so I haven't really every felt like I had a newborn. He was big and so alert from the very beginning. He has always responded to and been distracted by noises, so a busy house and lots going on around him keeps him happy.

He smiled for the first time on July 22nd (I actually remembered the date :-). His smiles are usually big open mouth smiles. He started to coo shortly after, but these last few days he is cooing like crazy. This is my favorite thing: smiles, coos and alertness.

Whenever, I go to pick him up (even when he has been fussy), he always looks up and me and give me a big smile. And he has gotten to the point that he smiles and coos while I am feeding him... so cute, but hard to feed too.

He usually goes about 5 1/2 to 6 hours sleeping at a time at night and then 3 hours after that. So, I usually feed him at 4:30 am and then again at 8:00 am. Not too bad, but we are working towards sleeping through the night (any pointers out there?)

He was born with more hair than my other children had at 18 months and it has always formed a little mohawk of sorts and a big thick "rugby" style chest. At least that is what I think of when I look at him in his birthday suit.

on his two month visit, he weighed 13 lbs. 1 oz and 24 inches long. That is 75% on the growth chart for each. He is strong... strong head, strong legs and strong grip.

On a personal note. I have to say I was nervous about having a boy. I thought "what if I don't love him as much as the girls". I am used to be a mom to girls and I love holding a little baby all dressed in pink, so I was a tad bit nervous. But I have to say... little boys are great. I have a special connection with him. He knows me. He responds to my touch, my voice and even my eyes. I feel his love and love this little boy. He is mine and I am his and that is a great mother-son bond I have felt from the very beginning. Boys are great!

So Talented

My sister loves to sew. She started by sewing aprons and she and her fellow sewers started a Secret Stitch Club where they meet often and sew together and now they even have an etsy shop. I am not sure what drove this passion and talent, but I decided to put it to use. I asked her to create aprons for my girls using the cutest fabric from Heather Bailey. I gave her an idea of the style I wanted and this is what she created for me.

How cute are these aprons? If you are interested, she would be willing to make you some too! They are even lined and seriously the cutest things... perfect for gifts, presents and just because.

questions and Answers

I would love to know a few answers to some of these questions. I am just curious and would love to know what all of you think or do.

1) BABY SITTING: how much to you pay your babysitter? include how many kids you have and what state you live in.

2) DINNER FOR GUESTS: do you have a go-to dinner that you use when you have guest over? if so, what is it?

3) Do you have a "first day of school" tradition? If, so can you share. My daughter is starting kindergarten, so I would love to do something fun.

4) NOISE AND NAPS: We have a central staircase, so the noises in our house can be heard from anywhere in the house. When my two girls play together, they are very loud. I have a hard time getting them to be quiet (either fighting or laughing). I am curious... if I just let them be loud, will Jake really learn to sleep through anything? What have you noticed? Is being able to sleep through noises something that is learned?

thanks so much

VT - Lifelong Learning

I have not been very good at visiting teaching these last few months. I have decided that maybe I will be better if I put together something cute to delivery to my friends/visiting teachees. I came up with this little gift to go along with the message this month.

A package of s'more ingredients with a tag that says "it is up to you to learn "s'more". I also included instructions for indoor s'more cooking and a tag that had the beginning of this quote... "Lifelong learning is essential to the vitality of the human mind, body, and soul". Elder Robert D. Hales.

We will see if it works and I get better at visiting teaching (my mid-year resolution).

Young Women Lesson #32 - Personal Purity through Self-Discipline

OPENING STORY:

Thunderous applause filled the concert hall. One of the world’s greatest violinists had just completed his final selection of the evening’s program. Eagerly, a woman made her way to the stage in hopes of expressing her admiration to this great artist. Threading her way through the crowd, she finally reached him. Shaking his hand, she said exuberantly, “Oh, I’d give my life if I could play like that!” He promptly responded, “Madam, I have!”

• What do you think the violinist had to do in order to master the violin?
− Discipline himself to practice
− give up some things that might have been easier or more fun
− have a desire
− set a goal to be a great artist

OBJECT LESSON:
Pass out one vanilla wafer to each girl and tell them if they wanted to, they could eat the cookies, but they would be "rewarded" if they didn't eat them. The choice was theirs.

Explain that much of what we do or do not do in life is determined by our ability to discipline ourselves. This discipline includes doing things that are hard or difficult as well as not doing other things.
• What are some things you have to do from day to day that you find hard to make yourself do?
• How do you stop doing things you know you should not do?

Write on the chalkboard: “Our Spirit Controls Our Body.”

Some things about our bodies are easy to control, and others are more difficult. For example, we have good control over our fingers. If we tell one of our fingers to bend, it bends. If we tell it to unbend, it unbends. If we give our feet an order, they obey immediately.

Some things are a bit more difficult to control like our thoughts. But we still have control over them.. We can choose which thoughts we will entertain, and thus learn to channel our thoughts in positive, constructive directions.

Experiment in self-discipline.
1) Ask each young woman to move her right hand in a circle, then to move her left foot back and forth, then to move her head up and down.
2) Now ask each of them to sit very quietly and concentrate on anything except what you are going to describe to them. Then describe in detail a delicious food or dessert.

• Which was harder, telling your hand or foot what to do, or telling your thoughts and emotions what to do?

Acknowledge that it is hard to control ourselves, but it is something we can learn to do. Our Father in Heaven has told us to keep our thoughts, appetites, and emotions within certain bounds. As our Father, he would not ask us to do something that we are not capable of doing. We are his children. We have the capacity to become like him.
Explain that being morally clean and virtuous requires physical restraint and self-control. Help the young women understand that as we exercise self-discipline, we strengthen our spirit’s control over our body. Our capacity to control ourselves increases every time we make a choice to do it.

ACTIVITY: ETERNAL ROAD TRIP (this idea came from Sugardoodle, Idea by Kathy in California)
(I googled the different road signs and printed them out on paper and cut them and placed them around the room. I also cut out a car and a picture of the temple. The temple went at the end of the journey and the car was used to go from sign to sign to the temple).

Life is like a journey… we are driving through life and have been giving signs or warnings to help us control our actions, thoughts and behavior. As we try to drive through this road of life you will see all kinds of road signs to help us follow the right path.

We will start by driving, when you get to a sign stop and we will talk about each one.

STOP- dressing immodestly. When you are dressed modestly you invite the companionship of the spirit. We should never lower our standards for any occasion!!! (school formals, beach, party with friends, school) Let's list some of the do's and don'ts of modest dress... help us prepare for the temple. Short shorts, skirts, low cut in front or back, don't cover shoulder, Tight clothing, shirts that don't cover stomach

KEEP RIGHT -Keep right thoughts and good language always. What message do you send when you use foul language? Let's get realistic, you guys hear this garbage all the time at school right? So how does self discipline help you so that it does not rub off on you? Foul language harms your spirit, degrades you. Choose friends that don't do this, help others to stop.

WRONG WAY - Doing drugs and alcohol is always the wrong way. Never use tobacco in any way, any form of alcohol is harmful to you body and spirit. What does alcohol do to you? It weakens your judgment and can lead to you breaking the law of chastity.

"Some become enslaved with compulsive habits or yield to appetites and plead that they are helpless before their habit the temptations are stronger than their will to resist. But we can choose. We can break bad addictive habits with sheer determination to do so." -Richard L Evans. How does self discipline play a role here?

U-TURN: You turn and run away from any situation where the spirit can't dwell. You are always free to choose in this life. But with that choice you will also have to suffer the consequences. Joseph of Egypt and Potiphar's wife (Genesis 39:12) turn and run.

STOP- stop with a simple good night kiss!!! Satan may try and tempt you to rationalize sexual intimacy before marriage. It is all around us isn't it? In fact you are looked upon as weird if you don't. The Lord has given us clear guidelines that will keep us safe from Satan's temptation. -no passionate kissing - stay in safe areas -no lying down -no touching private sacred parts of the body with or without clothing. Don't date before your 16 story from lesson.

YIELD- Yield to the spirit. We need to make sure that we are doing the things that will allow us to have the Lord's spirit to be with us. How does self discipline help here? Prayer, seminary, scripture study, attend our meetings,... It is all hard to do, but the more you do it the easier it gets right? A missionary serving in the eastern United States was confronted by a college student who was less interested in the [gospel] message than in the missionary's strict moral code. The student sneeringly asked the missionary how he controlled his desires when there were so many beautiful girls around, implying that the missionary must not [have normal feelings]. The elder explained: 'It is not that I am abnormal; it is that I know I am responsible and in charge of mind and body. You think you are helpless in the face of your desires. You think you are a victim of them. I have proven to myself that I am the master of those feelings' " (Terrance D. Olson, "Teaching Morality to Your Children," p. 14). As we exercise self discipline we strengthen our spirit's control over our body. Then our ability to control ourselves increases every time we make a choice to do it.

CONSTRUCTION ZONE - What are we trying to become? What are your goals for the future? How do you have to discipline your selves to reach those goals? We are trying to become temple worthy daughters of our Heavenly Father, future missionaries, college students, and mothers.

ONE WAY- There is only one way to the temple and to return to our Heavenly Father and that is to follow the lords plan. Each time we use our self discipline to make good choices we are one step closer to returning to our Heavenly Father. President Brigham Young said, "When you are overtaken in a fault, or commit an overt act unthinkingly; when you are full of evil passion, and wish to yield to it, then stop and let the spirit, which God has put into your tabernacles, take the lead. If you do that, I will promise that you will overcome all evil, and obtain eternal lives" (in Journal of Discourses, 2:256; italics added).

CONCLUSION:

We can choose to give into temptations and our passions and not use self-control in our lives (and have eaten the vanilla wafer because it was there to be eaten and you didn’t want to use your self-control).

Or we can following Heavenly Father’s plan and commandments and use self-control in our lives and have complete control of what we do and in the end we will be rewarded for our restraint and discipline and Heavenly Father will give us greater blessings. Like a pink, yummy frosted cookie. In reality, blessings beyond anything we can imagine (celestial kingdom, exaltation, etc).

TESTIMONY

HANDOUT: I gave the girls a pretty pink frosted cookie with a tag attached that read ""when we exercise self control, we will receive "sweet" rewards".

Summer Utah Trip Part

We just got back from our annual summer trip to Utah. It was so much fun to see family and be with one another. The trip was broken into 2 parts. The first half being with my family and the second half with Chris' family. So, here it part ONE.

We arrived Friday night to join Chris' family for a BBQ, fireworks and fun. We spent the night with his brother's family and stayed up until 1:00 am talking. then the next day headed down to Provo to stay at our family cabin near Sundance.

The best things about the cabin: hammocks, the creek, s'mores, cool/cold nights, stink bugs (okay, I don't love those), nature, the bear trail and Provo Canyon (just to name a few).

The first order of business when we arrived was for grandpa to make the girls their own wooden boats to play with in the creek. He quickly whipped up two boats and the girls loved dropping their boats in the creek and then using the string attached to retrieve them and do it over and over again. NOTE: this was great, because as a child, one of my fondest memories was playing with my homemade wooden boat at the cabin. So, I was thrilled, my girls got to have the same experience.

On Saturday, we had a taste-test. Who makes the best burgers? In-N-Out, Chaddar's or Five Guys and Fries (which is where we ate that night). Now, I am not a big burger person, so the results are according to my husband and the results are (drum roll please).... In-N-Out! He still thinks they are the best burgers when it comes to fast food burgers. But I personally really liked their fries.. they were a winner in my book.

Later, Saturday night, my aunt and uncle and cousins came over to the cabin for root beer floats and to report on my cousin Craig's mission to Samoa. It was fun to chat with my cousins who are now all so old and grown-up, since I still think of them as little boys (and a girl) that I used to fight for their love and affection. Now, I just settle for being the cool older cousin with kids (and yes, that drives a mini-van, which they informed me is not so cool).

Monday, we met up with our friends from Chicago, the Breilatts, and went to Sundance. We rode the ski lift to the top and hiked around the mountain a bit. It was fun and we were able to get a new family photo with a beautiful backdrop of Sundance. The best part of that excursion were the magic bars from the deli at Sundance. They are so good! My new mission is to duplicate that recipe... I am still thinking about them and how yummy they were.

On Tuesday, we decided to take a walk to Bridal Veil Falls. The girls always yelled 'waterfall" when we would drive past it, so we thought it would be fun to walk to it and let the girls see it up-close. So, we started our walk and quickly realized it was going to take awhile. It was a mile and a half there and it took about an hour to get there and it was nice and hot. We played at the falls for a bit and then headed back the other 1 1/2 miles. Chris had to carry Ella the whole way because Hannah put her sandal in the pipe and it went down the river and so she was in the stroller which Grandpa pushed because Mom hadn't exercised in 10 months and was very out of shape.

Then we headed to Heber City in search of the best milkshake.

Possibilities are Endless

I mentioned before it is all in the packaging. I found this great blog that shows countless ideas of cute packaging. The possibilities are endless in packaging and uses. You can use them for gifts, shower favors, visiting teaching gifts, entertaining, and just because you want to do something nice for someone.

I love things like this and am about ready to do something cute... just because.
