Need some Help!

So, my daughter is 5 years old and is still not potty trained during the night. I am at a loss on how to do this. She is such a deep sleeper, so how do I start the process? Do I have to let her wet her bed or are there other ways going about this?

Please all those that have experience in this matter... give me any tips you might have. Please!

My son Gavin wasn't trained through the night until he was six. I used the alarm from this article: http://www.drgreene.com/21_584.html
It really helped. He hadn't been dry through the night more than a hand full of times in his entire life. He was completely trained within 1 month. It may seem drastic, but Gavin was the one who wanted to do something about it. I think his success had a lot to do with the fact that he really wanted it to work. Hope that helps.

we cut off liquids after 6:30 and then if they really need one, they get just a sip before bed.

I wouldn't use pull ups she won't feel when she is wet and won't wake up.

try using a reward sticker chart for every week she is dry she gets to go pick a special treat or toy at the store.

We actually went to the physician to see if there was something wrong. NOPE - some of us just take a little longer to train that part of our bodies. He also mentioned sticker charts - but what worked for my sissy was just giving her control over the problem. She helped with deciding how we would tackle the problem. Using her ideas such as; chocolate milk on mornings she's dry, having to pull off her own wet sheets, etc. It just let her take ownership of the problem instead of her mom telling her that she has a problem. She is just turning six and we have had a good month of no wet mornings! YEA! GOOD LUCK - and keep us informed.

I'm all for the alarm system. I remember using it for Dal and it worked but you will have to expect a few accidents and changing sheets, etc. They make pads for training at night for the bed. I don't remember using the alarm for you girls - you seemed to work it through naturally - too long ago to remember.

I would cut off liquids at 6 or so depending on what time she goes to bed. It is going to be a pain but you need to let her feel herself wetting the bed. They do have little pads that you can go buy that are just the right size and soak up everything.

I don't have many suggestions. Both of my kids never wet the bed at night. I'm really lucky!

I do have a friend who's daughter turned 6 in March and she still wets the bed. She's tried a lot of stuff. She is a deep sleeper too.

Good luck!

I have no real experience with this, but I did recently learn in one of my nursing classes that the nerves linked to the bladder aren't really working completely until kids are 5 or 6 years old. The instructor said it's pretty natural to still have problems at that age. It might just take some time. Hope you are able to work it out together.

I think it's really common for kids to wet the bed til age five or six. The most important thing is she doesn't feel bad about it. I think the best advice is cutting off liquids after 6 or 7 pm. It's hard, but it works. Buy a plastic sheet for now...good luck!

I just went through this with my daughter. She was a heavy sleeper and would not wake herself up. I noticed when she wet the bed she felt awful about herself so I stopped doing rewards if she was dry because of how she felt when she did not get the reward. My husband and I for a month first stopped drinking after dinner and then before we went to bed at night we would take her potty. Also if she ever woke up during the night we would take her to the bathroom even if she said she did not need to go. I would try to see at what time she would wet the bed and we even woke up to take her. That is what seemed to work for us. I think the most important is to build up her confidence.

You don't know me, but I have been reading your blog for a long time. Anyway, my son has the same problem. He is almost 6. I'm thinking about taking him to a chiropractor. We take my younger boy because he kept getting ear infections and it has really helped. I asked the chiropractor about help for bed wetting and he said that he has helped many people including kids in his own family. I would Ask for referrals from friends to find one that is good and works well with children. I think it sounds better than using the alarm.

I just found your blog...not sure how :) Anyways, We've got the same problem at our house!! We purchased an alarm system($150) but he got used to it and started sleeping right through the alarm! I've been doing a lot of research on this. One thing I read said to increase liquids during they day to exercise his bladder. We were told by our doctor that the size of the bladder plays a part in the whole thing to. But by increasing fluids in the day it actaully helps to stretch and strengthen the bladder. We're still working on making it through the night, but I think consistency is what has gotten us this far. I have to constantly remind him to "grab a drink" throughout the day and it also makes for lots of bathroom trips, but it seems to be helping. Also, we stopped doing the whole pull-ups thing. They seem to keep the child from feeling that they wet themselves. We have four "pee pads" and some nights we go through a few of them but my son wears underwear to bed and he wakes up when he's wet. Anyways, I hope this helps and Good luck! As a mom dealing with this same thing I know how frustrating it is having to change wet bedding and clothes in the middle of the night, but stay positive! It's hard on their little self esteems but encouragement goes a long way! Check out the bedwettingstore.com they have lots of products and literature about bed wetting.
